Hope college nixes gay filmmaker invite

HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - A Christian college in southwest Michigan has scuttled a student-proposed forum on sexuality that would have featured the participation of an openly gay Oscar-winning filmmaker.

Hope College in Holland issued a statement Wednesday saying Dustin Lance Black's advocacy for gay rights "would not contribute constructively" to the exploration of ongoing issues there.

Black received an Academy Award for his original screenplay for "Milk."

He's in the Holland area directing a film that he has written, "What's Wrong With Virginia."

The school says Black is welcome to accept an invitation from a Hope class to talk to them about his career.

He tells The Holland Sentinel that the only controversy he was aware of was that he hadn't given the class a date yet.
